Virtual Open Day - 17th November
SDIS brings together a vibrant community of 53 nationalities and 30 home languages, creating a setting where linguistic diversity is part of our natural rhythm and identity.
English is the language of instruction across all year groups, ensuring full academic immersion from the very beginning.
Portuguese remains a sustained element of the curriculum throughout the school, with students extending their linguistic repertoire from Grade 6 through the study of either Spanish or French. Additional pathways are available for fluent Mandarin speakers, while DP students may also pursue a self-taught language.
Multilingual community
Students learn in a genuinely international community shaped by 53 nationalities and 30 home languages, fostering a close-knit environment where every culture, heritage and traditions are cherished and valued.
English support
Learners build confidence in English through full academic immersion, supported by tailored EAL provision, personalised guidance and progress tracking using the Bell Foundation’s Assessment Framework.
Celebrating cultural heritages
Students celebrate our multilingual community through Mother Language Day, European Day of Languages and Portuguese, French and Spanish celebrations, deepening belonging and strengthening global mindedness.
Certifications
Discover our language programmes from Early Years to the IB Diploma Programme, supporting students from their first words to their greatest accomplishments.
Early Years - IB PYP
In Early Years - IB PYP, English underpins the development of communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening, while Portuguese is introduced once a week as part of early exposure to different languages.
In the final two years, children are supported through the structured phonics programme, Read Write Inc., delivered in small, levelled groups according to their English proficiency, ensuring focused support and consistent progress in foundational literacy.
IB Primary Years Programme
Language development continues within the IB PYP framework, with English at the centre of learning and Portuguese taught through a more formalised approach. Students follow either Portuguese A for native speakers or Portuguese B for non-native speakers, with regular weekly instruction of four to five periods.
From Grade 1 onwards, students who require additional support benefit from English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision, delivered through dedicated beginner and intermediate groups that ensure progress is both supported and sustained.
IB Middle Years Programme
In the IB MYP, English is the language of instruction, while Portuguese continues as a core subject through to the end of Grade 10. From Grade 6, students add a third language at acquisition level, choosing between Spanish or French, with the option to continue or switch in Grade 10. Mandarin pathways are also available for fluent speakers.
From Grade 8 onwards, students are also introduced to a range of international opportunities that broaden their academic and cultural perspectives.
IB Diploma Programme
Within the IB Diploma Programme, students continue their academic journey in English.
Students are also able to pursue a self-taught language option, allowing them to maintain or extend linguistic expertise in languages beyond the taught curriculum.
By offering diverse language experiences, students develop the confidence, skills and adaptability needed to succeed.
By recognising and nurturing each student’s language journey, St. Dominic’s International School, Portugal helps learners grow in confidence, fluency and global understanding.
Students can work towards bilingual certificates in both the IB MYP and IB DP, while their English progress is supported and measured through the Bell Foundation’s Assessment Framework.
Through ISP's International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS), students connect with peers across the globe through shared experiences that broaden perspectives and strengthen communication.
These opportunities encourage learners to use their languages with confidence while developing curiosity, independence and global mindedness.
Language learning at SDIS combines structure, support and everyday practice. Read Write Inc. helps younger learners develop early literacy with teaching matched to their level of English, while EAL provision offers targeted support for students building fluency.
Digital tools, including laptops and iPads, extend these opportunities across the curriculum and support progress in and beyond the language classroom.
Multilingualism as a core school value
Multilingualism at SDIS is not just about celebrating our community’s home languages - It’s about making our students excited about learning other languages, seeing the world, and themselves, through different lenses.

Formed by diversity
SDIS had a really strong multicultural presence which allowed me to make friends from all around the world. Being able to learn about their experiences and empathize with them taught me the value of diversity and inclusion from a young age.

Where diversity shapes identity
Being in a multicultural atmosphere at such a critical age helps you grow into an awareness of the importance of being part of something culturally bigger than you as an individual but also still cherishing what makes you, you.

Learning to see the world differently
It was an amazing school and I have very fond memories of it. St. Dominic’s made me appreciate different cultures, views and countries and if it wasn’t for that school I would definitely not be the person I am today.
